THE ARISTOTELIAN EVENTS – The Arnea Traditional Wedding (the revival)

The Revival of the Arnea Traditional Wedding brings the cultural heritage of Arnea to life, transforming a historical account from 1793 into a vibrant celebration for both the local community and visitors.

The event faithfully recreates the traditional wedding ceremony of Arnaia, as recorded by the French Consul of Thessaloniki, Esprit-Marie Cousinéry, during his visit to the region. According to the book “A Journey to Halkidiki in 1793” by Stefanos Kotsianos, the French traveler was deeply impressed by the rich customs of the time, the colorful traditional costumes, the dowries, and the festive celebrations that characterized an 18th-century wedding in Arnaia.

The celebration begins at Chorostasi Square (Town Hall Square). The bride is dressed in the traditional local bridal costume at the historic guesthouse “Aristotelous tou Alexandrou”, accompanied by local wedding songs. Family members, friends, relatives, and fellow villagers—the traditional “psiki” (wedding party)—gather at what symbolically represents her family home to bid her farewell, while her dowry is ceremonially loaded onto horses and sent to her new household.

Meanwhile, the groom prepares in the courtyard of the Folklore Museum of Arnaia, which serves as his symbolic family home. Surrounded by his own **psiki**, he is dressed in the traditional groom’s attire while local songs are performed in his honor. A village barber completes the preparation by shaving him with soap lather and a traditional straight razor, reviving one of the area’s most distinctive pre-wedding customs.

Accompanied by traditional musicians, local melodies, and Arnaia’s folk dances, the groom’s wedding party begins its procession toward the bride’s house. Along the route, relatives offer traditional wedding treats and **mountovina**, a local spirit distilled from honeycomb, adding to the joyful atmosphere shared by participants and spectators alike.

The two wedding parties meet at Chorostasi Square before proceeding together to the church for the symbolic wedding ceremony. Immediately afterward, the square is transformed into a traditional village gathering place, where the wedding feast begins. Music, dancing, local delicacies, and festive celebrations bring the event to a memorable conclusion, preserving and showcasing the history, customs, and living traditions of Arnaia.
